reply        This came to me today during a feverish haze while sucking down Theraflu when I heard my Joan Baez CD wrong.

The Night They Closed Ol' Rusty Down
lyrics by Jeffrey Hitchin
(orig "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" by Robbie Robertson)

The con had come to an end, their license was revoked. The telephone cords disappeared and the elevators broke. In January 95, the hotel told them to get a life. They told each other to go to hell, it's a night the fans remember well....

CHORUS:
The night they closed ol' Rusty down,
none of the phones were ringing,
the night they closed ol' Rusty down,
all the fen were whining
they went, "Wah wah wah wah wah wah...."

Signs were posted everywhere, the news wasn't very good. They tried to explain, they said they were misunderstood. But excuses won't work anymore,
when there's a chandelier lying on the floor. Antiques were broken - what a shame,
the hotel thought the con was all to blame.

CHORUS The fans got in their cars, and they slowly drove away, wondering if the concom would ever try again someday. It's reputation now on shaky ground,
it'll take years to live it down.
But the damange was already done,
and once again, only the filkers had any fun.
