Speaking for myself, I'd be very pleased and proud to hear someone else singing a song I'd written. That and being parodied are how you know you've truly "arrived":-). Also, it would give "airtime" to an old song, so that I could sing something newer....

I guess there might be people who would be touchy about having someone else sing "their" song, but I can't recall having met any.

About the only think I could think of that wouldn't be okay to sing would be songs that are *very* vulgar...there are a few out there, or songs that are out-and-out hateful.

reply        It's true that some old timers will run screaming into the night if you start _Old Time Religion_--but that's our problem, not yours.

Errr... I think I know what you mean by the "Great Conflict" (Cat looks doubtful) but I had no idea it might have gone so far as to make Misty's songs unwelcome (and stain their singers as well) in local filks. Does anybody have more info on this? Personally I've never disliked anyone so much that I would punish people for singing their songs...

Try to think of us as a bunch of friends you don't know yet, people who love music and are anxious to hear the gift you're going to sing for us. Critiquing your performance? The closest we are likely to come is winces of sympathy if something goes wrong. We want you to do well as much as you want you to do well. Honest.

I kind of like the idea of doing Bardic one night and Chaos the next. I've also seen "pokerchip" chaos done in Salt Lake City at ConDuit--it works like chaos, except that when you pick pass or play you toss your chip in, and you don't get another till all the chips are in, so it still works out to be one turn per round. However the last time I saw that done, chips were handed to everyone who drifted in, which was very frustrating. We had one chip out, and I was about to get a chance to collect a new chip and request a song, when in walked five more people.... So pokerchip has its drawbacks too.

reply        I kind of like the idea of theme hours, though. It would have to be worked out and published beforehand, so people who wanted to hear/sing particular themes would know when to show up.
