Request for Submissions for a Filk FAQ

Request for Submissions for a Filk FAQ

JT and I (Quarong) have been discussing the idea of compiling
a Filk related FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) List, which
would be available through this mailing list, and perhaps in
hardcopy for consultation at conventions. The original idea
was mine, and JT has agreed to add it to the accessible archive
if I take the main responsibility for putting it together. Thus
I now bring the concept to you for some additional input.

I already have ideas for material for the following sections,
however your comments would be welcome:

-- A basic introduction to what "filk" is.
-- A "Top 10" list of Do's and Don'ts for etiquette and
participation.
-- Definitions of the different types of circles commonly
used in the NW.
-- An explanation of "Banned from Argo" and why it can be such
a controversial request. Two items I want to include, but need your suggestions in order to compile a solid list are:
-- Where someone can find tapes and lyrics. (Specific names
and contact information for convention merchants, stores, and mailing houses carrying this kind of material.)
-- Good songs and/or tapes for newcomers to filk. (Try to keep
it to your top 3-5 favorites.) Information as to which album a given song is on; and data on writers, singers, & publishers, would be deeply appreciated. The third and final place where I could really use your input is with other questions you think a beginner might want to have answered in an easily accessible format. Think back to when you were just getting started and what you didn't know/understand; or about any portion of the last couple of months worth of discussion that jumped out and bit you. At this point in time, I plan to do most of the compilation and writing myself just because it will be easier than farming it out in multiple parts; but I want to incorporate as much of *your* input as possible. (I've already been archiving the recent discussions, and distinct ideas from those as well as from answers to this letter will be credited in the FAQ.) Depending on the responses I get back, or how much larger of a project than I expected this turns into, I may end up looking for volunteers to help with this or that topic; I'll let you know. Thank you very much in advance for all of your contributions. I hope this will be a useful product for all of us, and for newcomers yet to arrive. Depending on your response rate, and when I have time to rack out the basic text in between events in the rest of my hectic life, I intend to have the first draft out for comment sometime around the middle or end of July. (My work schedule is currently changing, I'm about to move, and I have another large email item that will take most of the next 2 wks; so this should give you plenty of time to send me your material.) [In an attempt to cut down on the extraneous mail in all of our inboxes, when submitting your questions/answers/comments/data please consider whether it is an item you wish the rest of the mailing list to see and remark upon; or whether it might be better just sent to my private address.] Until later, Quarong (quarong at eskimo.com)
