Newsgroups: alt.music.filk Message-ID: <b9f_9607060032 at bdragon.shore.net> X-Listname: Filk discussion What is this stuff called filk? My own favorite definition is simply "the folk music of the science fiction/fantasy fan community." For a more detailed description, see below: WHAT THE HECK IS FILK MUSIC? by Nick Smith (of LA Filkharmonics) Well, it's sort of like folk music. It is a mixture of song parodies and original music, humorous and serious, about subjects like science fiction, fantasy, computers, cats, politics, the space program, books, movies, TV shows, love, war, death. . . Filk music started off forty or fifty years ago, at science fiction conventions, where people got together late at night to have good old-fashioned folk music song circles. Well, late night circles being what they are, some folks got a little silly and started singing song parodies about their favorite SF books and authors. Fans started writing song parodies about themselves or each other. Some started composing serious songs about favorite topics. Some authors started composing original songs for their books. If the author didn't list a tune, fans made up one. Sometimes two. Sometimes several. Eventually, Filk songs wre written for just about every major science fiction or fantasy work. Some of them were actually good enough that people wanted to learn them, or just listen to them more than just at conventions. At that point, song books and recordings started being made. Over the last decade, Filk Music has reached the point where there are entire Filk Music gatherings, conventions, recording companies, and publications. Filk Music includes song parodies, original songs, and slightly musical poetry. It's a fun way to indulge in a little musical creativity, especially if you are a science fiction or fantasy fan as well as musically inclined. If you are only a fan, but not musical, you can still listen. Filk circles aren't pushy about requiring you to play or sing. If you are only musical, but not a fan, no one will hold it against you. Remember, we're in this thing for fun! [Written for flyer for distribution at California Traditional Music Society Annual Summer Solstice Dulcimer Festival and other local Los Angeles folk music events and stores.] What Nick didn't tell you is that the name started out as a typo of "folk" and was gleefully adopted by all and sundry as a term for what is after all a somewhat unusual subset. Kay Shapero, Moderator/Designated Topic Cop, FILK echo Subject: (2/10) FAQ - Rules (last updated March 24, 1996) This paragraph is particularly addressed to those of you in usenet/altnet: this newsgroup is an unusual case. FILK is a FIDOnet echo, gated into usenet as alt.music.filk, and as the filk digest mailing list (note - these are identical; do not subscribe to both!). Since it is a FIDOnet echo, I am required to make the rules post from time to time, as "moderator". Usenet readers, do not let the term "moderator" throw you - in FIDOnet it refers to a Designated Topic Cop, not some poor soul who has to READ everything before can be seen. I not only do not censor messages, I CANNOT intercept them once entered...
--Ye Designated Topic Cop
Rules for this echo, such as they are:
a bawdy filk list: to subscribe send a message to listserv at bdragon.shore.net with the message body consisting solely of: SUBSCRIBE bawdy) {please - we could use more posters. :->} ALL MATERIAL POSTED must be things the poster has the right to publish thanks to personal authorship, express permission of the author or copyright holder, public domain status, "anonymous" authorship [do check first] or the like. When in doubt, don't post it. Be sure to give copyright data, if any. See the following post for more information.
2) I collect the songs from this echo into downloadable files,
entitled FFILE{number of file}.ZIP. There are currently 27 of them.
If you do not want yours included, please say so when you post it!
These files can be downloaded or file requested from StormGate Aerie
3) Please, no flame wars. Though I may make an exception for any conducted _solely_ in filksongs if they're witty enough... Note - an offtopic argument in usenet may well involve people crossposting to many newsgroups, not all of which they read. Use netmail, not echomail to respond to them. 4) Threads which go off topic sufficiently will be KABONGED! by the posting of the obvious graphic. Please discontinue discussion of the off topic topic (:->) after the "kabong" message appears. (For those new to this group - be advised this is purely a verbal warning. See the next paragraph for what happens to those so rude as to ignore it.) Threads which show signs of degenerating into yelling matches will also be KABONGED! Feel free to resume these latter discussions in a month or so after all involved parties have had time to calm down. Be it noted that when I post one of these on anything but the most flagrant violation it means I'm getting complaints from the rest of the echo/newsgroup... 5) People who violate the rules will be warned that they are doing so until they either stop, or I get fed up and cut their feed (on the FIDOnet side), or start bugging their sysadmin or something on the altnet side (something I can't ignore from the altnet side can get the entire feed from FIDO to alt.music.filk cut, so don't feel too immune... :->) You get at least one netmail warning; how many others you get will depend on the offence (serious technical faults like massive dupe loops may get a system cut with little or no advance notice.) 6) If it should become necessary for me to stop moderating this echo I will designate a new moderator/Designated Topic Cop. If I cannot do so, Joe Bethancourt is designated emergency replacement. In case of communication difficulties, he is also empowered to post Kabong messages on alt.music.filk if I can't do so, so if you can't reach me via netmail, try him at ioseph at primenet.com. 7) Refer any technical problems involving alt.music.filk to the gateway operator, Stephen Griffin at 1:333/401 (from Internet root at bdragon.shore.net) other problems can be referred to me either via FIDOnet (see origin line for address) or from the internet at kay.shapero at bdragon.shore.net, or if that doesn't work try kay.shapero at salata.com. 8) Please do not post private messages on the echo; check with your sysop or sysadmin for alternatives. 9) That's it for the moment. If someone comes up with a new and improved way to aggravate all and sundry I reserve the right to make a rule to fit the occasion.

Note: After long and meritorious volunteer service, the node that served as default Internet/Fidonet Zone 1 gate has gone down. This means that addresses using the name at fnode.nnet.z1.fidonet.org may no longer be valid. Check with your local gate for alternate approaches. Fortunately there are still plenty of gates like the Black Dragon Inn (thanks, Stephen!).
