Happy New Year to all! I am not yet caught up on two weeks' worth of mail so this may be redundant. Quarong's posting of John McCutcheon's
"Christmas in the Trenches" had me trying to hum it even though I don't
know the tune. But the tune I was humming it to was very like those of Fred Small, like his song, "At the Elbe".

Thank you also Larry, for giving me background information on the McCutcheon song and on "No Man's Land". Orycon during the buildup to Desert Storm, someone led I think it was "The Strangest Dream", and all our thoughts were on the death we knew was coming in our name, and I turned to the person next to me and all over the room people were saying what he said to me, which was what I was about to say to him, which was
"There's only one song which can follow that." And then confusion arose
as there were about five song names mentioned. Someone said, well, we'll replyjust start playing, and did, and everyone sang "No Man's Land", and
"Green Fields of France", and "Johnnie McBride", and "Beat the Drum
Slowly" (that was what I thought the name was) and I think someone even thought the title was "Up on a Shelf", and they were all the same song.
