I debuted this song at Rustycon, and it's actually literally less
than a week old, though I wrote the first verse months ago, and didn't
finish it until now. Those of you who are familiar with my songwriting
style, you will notice this song isn't funny. Not even a little bit. Also,
it's not filk, it's based on my life.
Anyway, just so I don't all maudlin on ya'll, Anne Prather asked
that I post it as she wants to filk it. I'm thinking of sending it to
Heather so she can use it to rip my heart out in revenge. :)
Two Men Dancing
Words and music by Jeffrey Hitchin
We were at our best friend's wedding
it was the last dance of the night.
You and I watched all the couples dancing,
just two guys standing under the lights.
We should have seen this coming,
we were both alone the time before.
We said, "What the hell." Grabbed each other,
then waltzed across the floor.
CHORUS
Two men, dancing together
clumsily figuring out who will lead.
While we watch all our friends
finding that special someone they need.
And when the dance is over,
we'll go our separate ways again.
Flying off to different coasts
trying to muddle through the best way we can.
It's now seven months later,
I just got an invitation here in the mail.
And the thought of you and I going
is a thought that leaves me pale.
As I know when the dancing's over
we'll be left at the edge of the floor
and the feeling of being left out
is one I can't face anymore.
CHORUS
I asked you is it worth the trouble,
look at the freedoms being single affords me.
And you said, "Well, the days are okay,
but the nights can be cold and lonely."
A year has now come and gone,
and one of our friends is now divorced.
Two more friends are engaged
and you and I are still single, of course.
But I know that when the time comes
for one of us to be lifted in that chair,
we'll look off to the side and see
two men just standing there.
FINAL CHORUS
Two men, dancing together
clumsily figuring out who will lead.
While they watch all their friends
find that special someone they need,
and when the dance is over,
they'll go their separate ways again.
Flying off to different coasts
trying to muddle through the best way they can.
Two men, dancing together....
