Right. It looks like I need to update my long Con List and post
it again. The flyers have been sitting here for me to do so for
a couple of weeks, I just haven't gotten to them. In the meanwhile
however, here's the scoop on Norwes:
NORWESCON 20
March 27-30, 1997. = Yes, this is Easter weekend. Why is a
long story, but in brief that decision was made because the
hotel will give them cheaper roomrates on a weekend when they
don't otherwise do a lot of business except for the Brunch
which they can still have even with us there. Of the attendees
they surveyed (perhaps not in as thorough of a manner as they
should have, but that's another story), the majority said the
holiday was either irrelevant to them, or else preferrable to
the alternative of higher roommates or going to one of the
downtown hotels; even though that also meant a roving con date.
(If this really displeases you, write the committee. My choice
was for the last week of UW finals, make it easier on the large
number of university attached con-goers since the others can
get vacation whenever.)
GUESTS = Larry Niven (writing), AE van Vogt (writing), Vincent
di Fate (art), Brad Foster (fan), Glenda Hedden (volunteer),
and Dr. Robert L Forward (science). Plus some 200 odd other
speakers, artists, and performers onsite.
EVENTS = Multi-track programming on SF&F literature, art, science,
media, gaming, costuming, and more. Philip K Dick award. Artists
workshops, masquerades, 4 dances, videos, author signings and
readings, merchants, KidKon, banquet, hospitality, and filking.
They are trying a new format for the art show and auction, please
let them know your opinions.
FILKING = Usually one of the better cons, with a big circle at
night, and some provision for panels and concerts earlier in the
day, depending on who's running things. Circle format used to
always be Bardic, but the past couple of years we've used Moderated
Chaos at the coordinator's discretion when it's gotten big. I have
some correspondence out to this year's coordinator, trying to see
what he has planned; details if & when I have them prior to the con.
REGISTRATION = $50 at the door for all 4 days, some oneday
memberships should also be available. (Probably $25 each for
Thur & Sun, $30 for Fri & Sat, depending on space.) Kids 12 &
under are free with a paying adult who must be with them at all
times. Teens are full price and must have responsible adult on
the premises at all times, who can be located in case of trouble.
HOTEL = SeaTac Red Lion. (On the corner of Hwy 99 and S 188th
street, just south of the airport.) (206) 246-8600. $87 a night
for up to 4 people, $15 more for a 5th body. (This is about
15 miles south of Seattle for you non-local folks. Take Exit 152
off of I-5, and head W for about a mile or so, the hotel will be
on your right.)
reply FOR MORE INFO = Norwescon 20. PO Box 24207; Seattle, WA 98124.
