FILK: Stuck at the Masquerade

FILK: Stuck at the Masquerade

First off, Anne? You were 100% right.

This popped out in the last couple of hours. This is based (like a lot of my songs) on an actual incident. In this case it happened at an Arisia a few years ago.

Stuck at the Masquerade
words and music by Jeffrey Hitchin

It started out like any normal con
until a friend came running in desperation. He said, "Someone has dropped out of my project, could you help out in this dire situation?

"So I'm begging - could you please save my neck. Would you step in and fill his place?"
So now I'm wearing a hot costume
with half a pound of clown white on my face.

CHORUS
I didn't know what I was getting into
like figuring out a game you've never played I wish I was filking in the room upstairs but no, I'm stuck at the masquerade.
I'm stuck at the masquerade.

It felt like sensory overload
I almost thought that I was seeing things. There was Klingon strumming on a guitar
while another Klingon belly-danced in the wings.

But I just stood frozen to the spot
as I tried to force down the fear and rage when somebody pushed me up the stairs,
I guess it was time to go on stage.

CHORUS My legs were shaking, I started to sweat. I was more scared than I care to admit.
and the runway was so very dark
That I just couldn't see worth a darn.

The lights came up as the music swelled. The presentation went without a goof,
but I was happy when I got offstage
that the makeup and the costume were waterproof.

CHORUS The judges finally came back
with the news that everybody yearned to know. Then my friend went completely nuts
when his idea didn't win the best in show.

So my friend will never trap me like that again. I just won't do it, no matter what.
'Cause I have an inkling that next year
my own presentation will kick his butt!
