WESTERCON PERFORMING ARTS NOTES [Last Updated June 22, 1997.]

QUESTIONS, COMMENTS, PROBLEMS? PLEASE LET ME KNOW! You can reach me (Karen Rall) at <quarong at eskimo.com> prior to the convention. Onsite, I will be on a radio for most of the day and evening, and on a pager at night. During the day, my assistant, Ashley Harper, will have the pager.

(Please forgive any erratic sentence phrasings, this is straight out of my own notes.)

                                FILKING GUESTS:
-- Attending = Heather Alexander & Phil Obermarck, the Duras Sisters
(Elizabeth Burnham, Chris Dickenson, & Deborah Baudoin), Cecelia Eng & Andrew Nesbitt, Cat Faber, John Hedtke, Jeff Hitchin, Jordin & Mary Kay Kare, Darragh Metzger, Stephen Prescott.
-- Other Filkers Coming = Clarrise, Maya Kaathryn & Jeff Bohnhoff,
Barry & Lee Gold, Lynn Gold, John Moore, Rebecca Neason, Quentin d'Or.
-- Not coming = Joe Bethancourt, Margaret Davis, Steve Dixon, Julia
Ecklar, Leslie Fish, Kristoph Klover, Mercedes Lackey, Cynthia McQuillin, Jane Robinson, Steve Savitsky, Telynor, Larry Warner.

PANELS & OPEN CIRCLE DETAILS = Will follow in a separate file!

THEME HOURS = How many of you are familiar with the "Performer's Circles" that are commonly done farther east, or at many of the Worldcons? For those of you who are not, this is a format in which a small group of experienced musicians are up at the front of the room and they take turns playing songs related to the designated topic. The audience primarily listens in this arena; although there are sometimes choruses to join in on, or one of the performers will ask for requests. This format allows for a deeper exploration of given theme, and a convenient showcase for some of the performers who may not be seen a lot in the open evening gatherings. Anyway, this is how I intend "Media Filk", "Science & Technology Songs", and "Classic Filksongs" to run.

FRIDAY CONCERT SCHEDULE: (East Ballrooms)

6:00 Lynn Gold = Dinner music for dieters (#272)
6:30 Stephen Prescott = Poetic folk rock (#273)
7:00 Maya Kaathryn & Jeff Bohnhoff = Original folk & filk: music
	for the soul (#331)
7:30 Quentin d'Or = Fresh from the Middle Ages (#401)
8:00 Rebecca Neason = Celtic songs of love and woe (#275)
8:30 Jeff Hitchin = Satire and sensitivity (#400)
9:00 Duras Sisters = Dynamic a cappella trio from Arizona (#323)
9:30 Jordin Kare = Songs of modern technology (#271)
10:00 John Hedtke = Novelty tunes and banjo music (#392) 10:30 Cat Faber = Acoustic, mostly original filk (#270)

LOGISTICS:
-- The Metro Ballroom is our primary base, especially in the evenings;
and for the "Dead Dog Filk" gathering Sun afternoon. This is the only room on that floor, with some hallway nooks that will be used for club tables and the "dragon sculpture in progress". It's more than large enough for a good-sized circle, and still have room for someone to be tuning or talking quietly in a corner. (It holds 300 people banquet style.) There's nothing over or under it to make noise, yet it's a main stairway up from the dance, and one floor below Hospitality.
-- The daytime panels, theme hours, dances, other concerts, and
Alternate Filk in the evenings will all be held in the smaller rooms on the main floor. These hold 50-200 people theater style, and are well insulated from the dance.
-- There will be a sound system in place for the Cabaret, Filk Concerts,
and a couple of the daytime concerts. The Theme Hours and Open Circles will be accoustic gatherings, as putting any type of microphone in those will be more hassle than benefit.
-- At least one copier will be available at the general songcircles in
the evenings. There is also a Kinko's about a block away for larger runs.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES:
-- The Friday concert slots are listed for 30 minutes, which actually
means 25 min for performing, and 5 minutes to change over to the next act.
-- Moderators for the Open Circles are still being chosen. The point
here is to make sure someone is available to supervise the room, especially when I have to be elsewhere. I'd like to have some variety of formats, but the actual choice will be up to that moderator's personal inclination and the consensus of the participants. Details shortly.
-- "Children's Theme Session" = Cecilia and Clarrisse have both indicated
interest in this, and Kidkon says they'd love it. When it occurs will be dependent upon everyone's schedule onsite. (You're welcome to show up there and sing along!) [Maybe Sat, so we can announce it Friday?]
