This is basically a step used in Scottish country dances like "MacDonald of the Isles" and "From the Broomielaw". Start with your right foot and do a kind of shuffle where you step forward on the right, then bring the left up behind it (but not in front of it), then step forward on your right again. While you are now having your weight shifted on the right foot, your left comes forward and hangs in the air like you're pointing it forward while you hop slightly on the right. Repeat this step starting with the left foot now (forward left, bring right up behind, forward on left, then kick/hop with the right going out forward this time). If anybody wants to see what this looks like, just ask me the next time you see me and I'll show it to you.

If anybody's familiar with "Mairi's Wedding" that dance uses an almost strathspey, but because the dance goes so fast, you can't do the kick/hop properly so it's more like skipping, but you're still trading front feet.
