Below are a copy of my NORWESCON FILK "working notes". They hopefully will give you enough information to get you excited about this upcoming convention in SeaTac, WA. Let me know if you have any comments. --- <quarong at eskimo.com>

OUR ROOMS:

  • Cascade 6 = Third floor, holds about 40 people. This will be the site of the smaller, discussion panels; as well as the secondary filk circles in the evening. The Green Room is on one side and another panel room is on the other.
  • Cascade 13 = Third floor, holds about 100 people, and is wired for microphones. Site of the theme circles and other music generating panels. This is between the hotel office and a storage area.
  • Evergreen 3 & 4 = Second floor, holds a couple hundred easily. Site of the concerts and the main filk circle. Wired for microphones, we'll also be bringing the sound system in here. Two similar rooms are across the hall, otherwise this is pretty isolated.

CONCERTS = All will be occurring in Evergreen 3 & 4. We don't have to use all of the time slated below, I'd rather not, but it's what is open right now. For these sessions, we'll set up the sound system. (4 boom mikes, 2 speakers on poles, 1 speaker as a monitor, and a 6 input amplifier/mixing board.) We should get some help from Special Events to do setup and breakdown, but I'm still looking for some engineer types to run the board during the actual concerts, otherwise you make do with my poor skills. :)

  • Friday = 9-11pm. (Just before is a comedy skit called "Treks Not Taken" by Steven Boyett which isn't under my jurisdiction, but is supposed to be really good.) Setup will probably occur at 4 pm after the HIT Lab presentation all day; and we'll go to Open Circle afterwards. Opposite is the dance and Camarilla meeting.
  • Saturday = 9-11pm, with setup at 8 and Open Circle afterwards. (We could start earlier, but that would be shooting ourselves in the foot opposite the Masquerade.) This timeslot will be mostly milling in the hallways as everyone waits for the Dance and parties to start, so we could get a crowd.

FILKING PANELS ANTIQUE INSTRUMENTS = Sunday 2-3pm, Cascade 13. Margaret Davis, Laurie Riley. Psaltries, hurdy-gurdies, and bodhrans. You see them at Folklife, but where did they come from and how do they operate? Our afficienados of strange noise-makers will conduct the introductions.

SOUNDTRACKS = They are the heartbeat, the emotion underlying the action in movies and TV shows. They contribute excitement, suspense. We intend to discuss the marriage of the composer’s vision to that of the director, and also when that marriage between sound and picture did not work quite as well. Some of the films we’ll discuss are “Dune” (by TOTO), “Planet of the Apes” (Jerry Goldsmith), and “Blade Runner” (Vangelis). -- Saturday 10-11am, Cascade 6. OPEN CIRCLES:

  • Thursday = From 8pm on in Evergreen 3 & 4.
  • Friday = From 9-11pm in Cascade 6. From 10:30pm on in Evergreen 3 & 4.
  • Saturday = From 7-11pm in Cascade 6. From 11pm on in Evergreen 3 & 4.
  • Note: I'd love to have some help moderating these sessions, especially the early "secondary circle" which will be occurring while I'm down supervising the concerts. This mostly means just being present, keeping things moving, making sure everyone gets their turn and no one is disruptive. Let me know if you're interested.

THE TIMELINE LATE JANUARY = Programming will know what rooms and how many timeslots are available to schedule things into. All of the survey data entry will be done; and the process of matching panels, speakers, and timeslots will begin.

FEBRUARY = The panel wrangling nightmare will continue. (For those of you who’ve never done this before, think of the worst variable juggling problem from your junior high math class & multiply by 2000. :)

FEB 15th = All biographies must be received by Publications for printing in the Program Book.

MARCH 1ST = All panel descriptions and the associated list of speakers must be submitted to the Program Book. Itineraries will be sent out in the first week or so: Please let us know immediately if anything needs to be changed on yours.

MARCH 7th = All room layouts and equipment needs must be turned over to the Technical and Hotel depts.

MARCH 15TH = Deadline for the Pocket Program, which will contain the grid of which panels are occuring at what time.

APRIL 9-12 = THE CON!

Alright, I think that's everything for now; although I won't promise that there won't be a couple more changes between now and the con. :)

Let me know if you have any comments or questions, I look forward to seeing you at the con!
