Norwescon Update

Norwescon Update

From: Mistress of the Blue Shift <quarong at eskimo.com>
Date: Sat, 21 Mar 1998 13:40:11 -0800

                        QUARONG'S NORWESCON FILK NOTES ATTENDANCE:

  • YES = Betty & Dave Bigelow, Steve Dixon, Cat Faber, Arlene Hills, Jeff Hitchin, Scott MacHaffie, Darragh Metzger, Miki Nelson, Joe Warton-Banks.

A Little Knight Music = Steve Dixon, Jeff Hitchin, Darragh Metzger. Plus John Moore, Lara Larson, Don Parris, Maria Baker.

  • NO = Avalon Rising Acoustic (Margaret Davis, Kristoph Klover & Deirdre McCarthy) Heather Alexander, Joe Bethancourt, John Bunnell, TJ & Mitchell Burnside-Clapp, Duras Sisters, Cecilia Eng, Lee & Barry Gold, Golden Bough, John Hedtke, Jordin & Mary Kay Kare, Kathy Mar, Rebeccca Neason, Cynthia McQuillin, Phil Obermarck, Stephen Prescott, Spider & Jeanne Robinson, Jane Robinson, Steve Savitsky, Telynor, Larry Warner.
  • UNKNOWN = Maya & Jeff Bohnhoff, Lynn Gold, Anne Prather.

OUR ROOMS:

  • Cascade 6 = Third floor, holds about 40 people. This will be the site of the smaller, discussion panels; as well as the secondary filk circles in the evening. The Green Room is on one side and another panel room is on the other.
  • Cascade 13 = Third floor, holds about 100 people, and is wired for microphones. Site of the theme circles and other music generating panels. This is between the hotel office and a storage area.
  • Evergreen 3 & 4 = Second floor, holds a couple hundred easily. Site of the concerts and the main filk circle. Wired for microphones, we'll also be bringing the sound system in here. Two similar rooms are across the hall, otherwise this is pretty isolated.

CONCERTS = All will be occurring in Evergreen 3 & 4. We don't have to use all of the time slated below, I'd rather not, but it's what is open right now. For these sessions, we'll set up the sound system. (4 boom mikes, 2 speakers on poles, 1 speaker as a monitor, and a 6 input amplifier/mixing board.) We should get some help from Special Events to do setup and breakdown, but I'm still looking for some engineer types to run the board during the actual concerts, otherwise you make do with my poor skills. :)

FRIDAY

4-5pm = setup ??
5-7 = panels ??
7-9pm = “Treks Not Taken” by Steven Boyett
9-10pm = A Little Knight Music (the first few minutes of this is likely to
be change-over between acts)
"Musical mayhem from the land of Tir na n'Og" Maria Baker, Steve Dixon,
Jeff Hitchin, Lara
Larson, Darragh Metzger, John Moore, & Don Parris.
10-10:30pm = Echo's Children
"Acoustic original & filk music featuring close harmonics" Catherine
Faber & Arlene Hills.
10:30-? = Open Circle

SATURDAY
8-9pm = setup
9-9:30 = Miki Nelson & Joe Warton-Banks "Energetic Celtic" 9:30-10 = Jeff Hitchin "Music at warped speed" 10pm - ? = Open circle

  • Friday = 9-10:30pm. (Just before is a comedy skit called "Treks Not Taken" by Steven Boyett which isn't under my jurisdiction, but is supposed to be really good.) Setup will probably occur at 4 pm after the HIT Lab presentation all day; and we'll go to Open Circle afterwards. Opposite is the dance and Camarilla meeting.
  • Saturday = 9-10pm, with setup at 8 and Open Circle afterwards. (We could start earlier, but that would be shooting ourselves in the foot opposite the Masquerade.) This timeslot will be mostly milling in the hallways as everyone waits for the Dance and parties to start, so we could get a crowd.

On Related Topics:
-- Equipment storage = The con is NOT able to provide anything, according
to my Dept Head: liability, insurance, all that legal money stuff. I assume most of you will be getting your own rooms, or will have friends who do, so hopefully this should be a problem. If it really is, let me know, and maybe I can match you up with someone.
-- Tune-up Area = Friday evening we're likely to have a small programming
room not far away we could probably use, I can see about arranging this. If that's not possible (and Sat daytime it definitely won't be), those of you who remember this site from previous years know that the Evergreen rooms are in a separate area on the 2nd floor, with some large alcoves along the main walkway, and some pretty secluded dead-ends along the back hall. There is also a decent lounge in the women's (and maybe the men's too) restroom.

Album Sales:
-- I lost the argument to get a sales table at the concerts in the
evenings. Apparently the Executive Committee deferred to the Dealer’s Liaison and she decided it would be unfair to the merchants who were paying for their tables in the main room all weekend. Sales that happen on the QT in someone’s room, they can’t do anything about.
-- Next year apparently they would be willing to reserve a table for the
filkers to pay for and run cooperatively in the Dealers Room, which would give them the right to have a table up at the concerts as well. (Just like the book dealers generally take their wares up to the Autograph Sessions.)
-- In the meantime, I have located a merchant who is willing to discuss
taking your albums on commission that weekend, and actually she may already be carrying music for a couple of you. Please contact her directly for more details = Pat Abadacca of Quicksilver Fantasies. (208)773-7731 or <quicksilver at enaila.nidlink.com>.

FILKING PANELS COMPUTER MIDI WORKSHOP = Saturday 10am-noon, Cascade 12. (Judith has the names on this.)

DRUM CIRCLE = Sunday 1-2pm, Cascade 13. Garth Stubbs. Bring your percussion instruments, (or boots, notebooks, or anything else that makes noise), and join us for some wild rhythms!

FILK 101 = Friday 11am-noon, Cascade 6. Steve Dixon, Jeff Hitchin, Darragh Metzger, Karen Rall. Whether you're new to the circle or an experienced participant, come with your questions and your comments.

MUSIC AND OUR LIVES = Friday 1-2pm, Cascade 6. Cat Faber, Jeff Hitchin, Darragh Metzger, Karen Rall. -- What draws us to filk music? How do songs affect our moods and preserve our history?

PARTICIPATORY JAM = Saturday 2-3pm, Cascade 13. Jeff Hitchin, Miki Nelson.  Bring your voice and your instruments, and join us for a round of instruction and experimentation.

SOUNDTRACKS = They are the heartbeat, the emotion underlying the action in movies and TV shows. They contribute excitement, suspense. We intend to discuss the marriage of the composer’s vision to that of the director, and also when that marriage between sound and picture did not work quite as well. Some of the films we’ll discuss are “Dune” (by TOTO), “Planet of the Apes” (Jerry Goldsmith), and “Blade Runner” (Vangelis). -- Saturday 10-11am, Cascade 6. Edward Martin, Spyder Isaacson, Kat Hartman, Brian Oberquell, Ryan Johnson, Dafydd Dyar.

THEME PANEL: CHILDREN’S FILK = Young and old, come join us in KidKon for some fun sing-alongs. -- TBD in KidKon. Jeff Hitchin, Steve Dixon, Arlene Hills, Cat Faber.

THEME PANEL: MEDIA FILK = Saturday noon-1pm, Cascade 13. Jeff Hitchin, Arlene Hills, Cat Faber. --- Babylon 5, Star Trek, Star Wars, and our other favorite shows captured in song.

THEME PANEL: MEDIEVAL & RENAISSANCE MUSIC = Saturday 3-4pm, Cascade 13. David Bigelow, Miki Nelson, Joe Warton-Banks. -- Period music from the SCA and sources far older, and in a variety of languages.

THEME PANEL: SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY SONGS = Saturday 4-5pm, Cascade 13. N Talbot Brady, Jeff Hitchin, Arlene Hills, Steve Dixon, Cat Faber. Computers, genetics, and spacecraft, oh my!

OPEN CIRCLES:

  • Thursday = From 8pm on in Evergreen 3 & 4.
  • Friday = From 9-11pm in Cascade 6. From 10:30pm on in Evergreen 3 & 4.
  • Saturday = From 7-11pm in Cascade 6. From 10pm on in Evergreen 3 & 4.
  • Note: I'd love to have some help moderating these sessions, especially the early "secondary circle" which will be occurring while I'm down supervising the concerts. This mostly means just being present, keeping things moving, making sure everyone gets their turn and no one is disruptive. Let me know if you're interested.

Let me know if you have any comments or questions, I look forward to seeing you at the con!
