Okay, before I get John in trouble, let me explain exactly where that came from.

Back when I was a more serious Trek geek than I am now (back when TNG was the only new Trek on TV), I saw the novelisation for "Relics" (The Scotty episode) which had come out a month before the episode and I thought, "Oh, I need to read this." It was written by Michael Jan Friedman and I should have known better.

Anyway, he had written the following:

        "Laddie," the Scotsman intoned avuncularly.

I thought, "WOW! That's a neat trick!" It's one of my examples of when authors who use thesauruses go BAD.
