>thought-provoking attitudes" and songs that take you to "the deepest
>corners of the heart". She has been racking up finalist status at
>songwriting competitions across the country for the last three years and is
>currently celebrating the release of her debut CD entitled here.
>
>Richards' CD has been selected by Performing Songwriter Magazine as one of
>the Top 12 Independent Recordings for the November-December 1997 issue, and
>Kelly Wright from The Mountain (AAA radio station, KMTT-Seattle) says,
>"It's a beautiful album". The CD was produced by Charlie Murphy of the
>internationally acclaimed Rumors of the Big Wave, who is, according to the
>Everett Herald "Not bad company to keep" and is being released on the Cake
>Records label.
>

>**The Nudes**
>Friday, September 17th, 8pm
>Grateful Bread
>$8 General/$7 SFS Members
>Cheered by fans and critics alike, The Nudes, who are making their Seattle
>debut on Thursday Septebmer 17th at the Grateful Bread (7001 35th Ave NE),
>are modern day troubadours. Since their debut release in 1993, The Nudes
>have performed more than 600 concerts coast to coast. In concert, The
>Nudes tickle many a funny bone, but it is the soulfulness of their jazzy
>folk-pop blend that wins over Baby Boomers through Generation Xers. The New
>Yorker writes, "The Nudes singer-guitarist, Walter Parks, met their
>cellist-vocalist, Stephanie Winters, through a Village Voice ad a few years
>back; together they formed the tallest duo in pop. The band played it's
>first gig in 1991, and its been making beautiful, jazz-inflected folk music
>ever since."
>
>People ask why they named the group The Nudes. The Nudes as a name was
>inspired by classic paintings and sculptures. Walter and Stephanie enjoy
>the melange of risk and sophistication in such classic art. They aspire to
>put both of these aspects into their music. Additionally, the name The
>Nudes implies the essence of a thing or simplicity. The use of only the
>guitar and cello in concert exemplifies this simplicity. Walter and
>Stephanie describe their sound as acoustic music for the body and soul. A
>recently used description of The Nudes as "heavy mellow" seems to fit as
>well.
>
>Many of you will recognize Stephanie as the cellist in Dar Williams' band
>on her last tour through town. Now is the time to come discover Stephanie's
>talents with her own band and enjoy the songwriting of Walter Parks.
>Grateful Bread dinners and concert reversations can be made online at
>www.seafolklore.org or at 206.528.8523. We look forward to seeing you at
>the concert!

>The comment you may hear most frequently about Susan Werner is that she has
>it all. With a powerful and expressive voice, remarkable ability with both
>guitar and piano, a songwriting language all her own and a sure command of
>the stage, she is widely regarded as one of the most riveting performers on
>the acoustic circuit. An incredible evening of entertainment, music and
>humor. This is a treat to have her in such a small venue. Make reservations
>now... tickets for this show will disappear quickly.

>David Jones, one of the East Coast premier performers, is making a rare
>West Coast appearance in Seattle, Friday, September 25 on his way to the
>Bay Area. A native of Britain but a long time resident of New Jersey,
>David sings songs of the British Isles and North America, including Music
>Hall, Vaudeville, traditional ballads, songs of the sea and contemporary
>composers. David has performed in Festivals all over the world, colleges,
>clubs, and as an Equity member, has played
>featured roles on Broadway, radio and television.
>
>A structural engineer by training, David has worked in many ports of call
>in the US as well as East Africa. His travels have given him the
>opportunity to collect a wide variety of world music and stories. His
>performances are both a capella and with guitar. He involves his audiences
>in choruses ranging from boisterous to sentimental. His presentation of
>British Music Hall songs and stories, for which he is well known on the
>East Coast theater circuit, is as close to the original as can be found in
>this modern day and is not to be missed.
>
>
>**Garnet Rogers**
>With Caren Armstrong Opening
>Tractor Tavern, 7:30 pm
>Sunday, Sept. 27th
>$12/10 SFS Members
>
>
>Garnet will be steering the Volvo wagon into Seattle on Sunday, September
>27th for a
>7:30 p.m. show at the Tractor Tavern. Singer-songwriter Caren Armstrong
>will open the
>show.
>
>Canadian singer-songwriter Garnet Rogers has described his own voice as
>sounding like
>"a cow with a secret sorrow" but those who have experienced this charismatic
>entertainer's rich and expressive baritone will recognize this quip as an
>example of
>Garnet's irrepressible wit. Garnet's shows epitomize the spirit of folk
>music by
>balancing deeply moving song lyrics with hilarious stories. An accomplished
>musician
>on many instruments, Garnet's songs of everyday "small victories" cover a
>palette of
>emotions but often end on an optimistic note of hope or redemption. A Dirty
>Linen
>magazine review of his seventh solo recording Night Drive said "...Rogers
>digs an
>emotional well and invites the listener in for a long, refreshing drink."
>If you would
>like to read more about this captivating performer the Boston Globe has
>called "one of
>the major talents of our time," check Garnet's web page at
>http://www.flemtam.com/gr.html.
>
>Tickets can be purchased in advance at the following ticket outlets: Dusty
>Strings, Guitar Emporium, Bailey/Coy Books, Terra Mar, Totem Books, Galway
>Traders,
>and the Tractor Tavern. Tickets are $12 and SFS members will receive a $2
>refund at
>the door. At Garnet's request, please bring a nutritious nonperishable food
>item to
>the show for donation to the Chicken Soup Brigade (and check those
>expiration dates!).
>
>Caren Armstrong has a personable style that easily wins over her
>audiences. She has been a finalist in the Napa Valley Music Festival
>Emerging Songwriter competition twice, and was asked back this year as a
>judge and a headliner. She is a member of the NCSA and is a regular
>performer at their Local Gold concerts.
>
>Caren's first solo album, My Own Voice was released in 1993. In 1995 she
>released her second album Every New Day. Caren recently completed a
>successful tour of Nashville and is embarking on a tour of the Northwest.
>If you get the chance, go hear Caren Armstrong. You'll be glad you did. You
