Friday March 5 at 8:00 pm at the Grateful Bread
Singer-songwriter Joe Weihe will be appearing on Friday, March 5th at the Grateful Bread. The show starts at 8:00pm and the price is $6 at the door. Joe is well known as a crafter of mature, moving lyrics and memorable melodies. He delivers thoughtfully constructed songs with humor, a warm baritone and a clean, sophisticated fingerstyle guitar technique that moves easily between swing, country, jazz and folk styles. "Weihe writes gripping stories based on the experiences of real people....a breath of fresh air and a dynamic musician" (Heritage Music Review). A winner of the prestigious "Emerging Songwriter" contest sponsored by Sing Out magazine and the Kerrville Music Foundation, his songs have been recorded and performed by many Northwest musicians and his CD Dreamers and Fools received glowing reviews. "This is mature writing from a master songwriter...this material should end up on country charts, recorded by C&W stars" (Victory Review). Joe has been active in Seattle area's folk music community since his arrival from New Mexico (via San Francisco) in the early 1980s. He produced the successful First Friday concert series at the Still Life in Fremont Coffeehouse in the late 80s and hosted Victory Music's open mike in Ballard for it's first year. He has taught guitar and songwriting at the Portland Folklore Society's summer camp and has served on the staff and Board of Directors of the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop. Described as "one of the finest male voices in town" (the Rocket), Joe has focused a majority of his energy this last year on his six piece Western Swing dance band, the New Radio Cowboys, so this is a rare opportunity to come out and support one of our local songwriting treasures performing original material in a great listening venue! Don't be surprised if a few of his musical cohorts show up to round out the sound. March 6: Straw Into Gold and Heidi Muller
Singing harmonies of the soul since 1993, Straw Into Gold released their
third recording, "Love's Ripening" in October. The trio's repertoire ranges
from traditional folk music about weaving to arrangements of contemporary
folk singer/songwriters, to choral-like spiritual music. Members of the
group also write original songs with thoughtful lyrics and compelling
arrangements. Regardless of musical style, the trademark of Straw Into Gold
is clear, precision harmony and their sweet blend. The trio performs both a
capella and with their own instrumental accompaniment of guitar, dulcimer,
flute and whistle, and also often have other Northwest join in their
concerts. They've been longtime fans of Seattle's Heidi Muller, whose song,
"Palouse Lullaby" graces their second album and who played her mountain
dulcimer on their latest recording. Heidi is a nationally recognized
performer and an award-winning songwriter with a voice that is at
once powerful, crystal-clear and delightfully warm. Heidi will be
performing half of this concert, delighting the audience as always with her
well-chosen repertoire that includes her own thoughtful, tuneful songs,
along with her guitar and dulcimer virtuosity. The concert is at 8:00 at

In their more than 20 years' performing together, Lou and Peter have
delighted audiences with inventive and intelligent humor, in a style
mingling Woody Guthrie, Gilbert and Sullivan, Tom Lehrer and
post-nuclear polka. A fascination with language, a vision of the world both
profound and hilarious, and a whimsical and accessible performance leave
audiences with cheeks aching from smiling. Their songs are being sung
around the world, by a legion of professional musicians as well as shower
singers everywhere, but no one sings them as well as Lou and Peter
themselves. Peter writes lyrics and music, sings and plays the 12-string
guitar full-time throughout the year with his business partner, friend, and
onetime spouse Lou; and he

John Wesley Harding & Ellis Paul Sunday March 21st. at the Tractor Tavern in Ballard Cover: $10 Doors open at 7 pm Show starts at 8 pm For Reservations: SFS ticket line JOHN WESLEY HARDING: A wonderful Seattle based singer-songwriter with an exciting newfolk album. JWH's 1991 follow up, The Name Above the Title was again produced by Andy Paley. Touring as a solo artist gave Wes the flexibility to make each show a unique event, often playing new songs or unexpected covers. Wes's 1992 album, Why We Fight, was produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos in LA and recorded during the L.A. Riots. The darkness that descended on the city is evident in the record, and Wes dubbed the style "folk noir." The album was the perfect blend of witty lyrics over elegant melodies. Why We Fight caught the attention of one of Wes's favorite songwriters, Bruce Springsteen. Despite the fact that Bruce Springsteen hadn't employed an opening act since 1974, in the fall of 1995, Springsteen invited Wes to open two shows in California on Springsteen's first ever solo tour. Wes has been joined on stage at various times by many of his heroes: John Prine in Nashville, Joan Baez in San Francisco, Iggy Pop in Boston, Lou Reed in New York, Al Stewart in San Francisco, Bruce at McCabe's in Santa Monica and Ramblin' Jack Elliott in Denver. Those in the know, know. In early 1996, Wes released John Wesley Harding's New Deal, on Rhino Records, who had re-released It Happened One Night in 1992. Dubbed "Gangsta Folk", John Wesley Harding's New Deal was co-produced by Wes's close friend, Chris von Sneidern, at CvS's studio, which proved to be a strong working relationship. Rhino, a reissue label, hadn't put out many records by current artists. While Wes had many fans at the label, the association was ultimately short lived, though Wes says he's never worked with nicer people. 1998 found Wes with yet another label home, the very enthusiastic Zero Hour Records, based in New York. Wes entered the studio again with co-producer Chris von Sneidern, and delivered the beautiful and humorous Awake. The haunting and melodic record was released in March 1998 and continues the adventure in Gangsta Folk. For the first time in several years, Wes hit the road with a full band, rocking out in Europe and the States for many months with labelmate Steve Wynn. When he returned from the road, he decided it was time for a change of scenery, and moved up to Seattle. Wes analyzes his career to thus far, "If I was a band, I'd have broken up ages ago, but as a solo performer, its very possible to be successful by playing the music you want. America is a large place and there are plenty of gigs that'll have me- for which I am grateful. As for this record, Nic Jones' work really inspired me and my recent writing- Trad Arr Jones is the first album I HAD to make. Ghosts, Sex, Murder: they're just like my songs only 400 years older." ELLIS PAUL: An amazing Singer/songwriter, based in Boston. His latest release Translucent Soul promoted the Boston Globe to hail him as "the quentessential Boston songwriter; literate, provocative, urbanely romantic." Additional liner notes to draw from if you want to: Few contemporary songwriters "remove the dust" and mirror real-life with the clarity, detail and shine that 32 year old Maine native Ellis Paul does, and few craft such lucid, moving portraits, never resorting to the manipulation we take for granted in Hollywood tearjerkers and maudlin love ballads. Translucent Soul is the most telling and ambitious of Paul's four albums, which have already sold in excess of 50,000 copies. He is a seven-time Boston Music Award and 1994 Kerrville New Folk Award winner. Paul has a resonant tenor voice and open-tuned acoustic filigrees.

The Seattle Folklore Society is excited to present Seattle's own rhythm ensemble, Ladies Don't Drum, on Sunday, April 4, 1999 at Tractor Tavern in Ballard at 7:30pm. This all women percussion and drumming group combines various African and Latin rhythm styles to create an energy of sounds that will surely get you on your feet and participating in the electrifying spirit that resonates from them! The many instruments you will see and hear include congas, djembes, frame drum, jun-jun, and bells. More than a concert, a performance by Ladies Don't Drum is a celebration of music and dance which invites the audience to be an active participant in their celebration. The Stranger said of a past LDD performance, "Ladies Don't Drum develops hypnotic rhythms...a rhytmic tapestry of profound subtlety that rewards attentive listening...an astonishing evening." Led by drummer, Simone LaDrumma, these ladies tell stories through the intensity of their music, and use the power of their talent to support issues important to their hearts, such as feminist issues, enviromental concerns, and empowerment for racial and sexual minorities. In the past, they have performed with Seattle Men's Chorus, Maya Angelou, Bobby McFerrin, and Holly Near. They will be present at the World Rhythm Festival March 19-21. Ladies Don't Drum weave an expansive rhythmic landscape in order to create "a new kind of folk music for new kinds of folks." The Ladies plan to bring along a few surprise guests with them, so be sure to come out to the Tractor Tavern and be part of the celebration! Tickets are $9/$8 for members. For reservations, call (206) 528-8523.
