It's going to be a really good week for Celtic music, if you feel like
going out:
THURSDAY 11/18
* Hanz Araki and friends are playing at Conor Byrne's from 9pm-1am. The
rumor is that some of the Trinity dancers will be coming over after
their show to perform as well. (See their listing below.)
* There may be a $3 cover for the show, but other times it's free. Conor
Byrne's is just across the intersection from the Tractor, to the SE.
* Mary, John, and I will be there as soon as we finish our prior
engagement for the evening.
FRIDAY & SATURDAY 11/19 & 20
* The Paperboys will be at the Tractor Tavern. The opening band is
"Eddie from Ohio" and a friend says they're good. (The Paperboys are
fantastic!) EfO will start about 9pm, with Paperboys onstage around
10:30.
* Cost is $10 in advance, and I think $12 at the door, although their
shows have been SOLD OUT IN ADVANCE for the past year. (ie Get them
right now!) You can stop by the Tractor M-F from 12-4pm or any night
they have a show (which is most nights); or get them through
www.TicketWeb.com or 1-800-965-4827. The Tractor is at 5213 Ballard
Avenue NW, Seattle. 206-789-3599.
* Mary, Conal, John, a bunch of folks from my dance class, and I will
all be at the show on Friday. (Just as packed as Sat, but generally
consisting of fewer people looking to get drunk.)
THUR - SAT NOV 18-20 8pm
* The Trinity Irish Dance Company from the Chicago area will be
performing at Meany Hall on the UW Campus all 3 nights. This is the
performance division of an American dance troupe that regularly takes
awards at the international competitions. My current dance instructor
used take classes with them, and her sister competed with them, and she
says their show is well worth seeing.
* Call the UW Arts Ticket Office at 206-543-4880 or Ticketmaster for
tickets. They're $28.
FRI - SUN NOV 19-21
* Oireachtas '99, the Western Regional Irish Dance Competition, is held
for the first time in the Pacific NW. This is the qualifying level for
the Western portions of the US & Canada for the world competitions next
spring in Ireland.
* It will be at the Marriott Hotel in SeaTac. Competitions start at 4pm
on Fri and run through Sunday. There will also be traditional social
and group dances, as well as some modern pieces, put on for the
audience. Sat night there will be a dinner and social dance; plus
merchants and other displays all weekend.
* For ticket info contact Maggie Corrigan at 206-324-6141.
- Mary and I are both thinking about stopping by, but it depends on some
other things we have planned.
SAT 11/20
* Royal Scottish Country Dance Society Potluck (6pm) & Dance (7:30pm) at
the Congretional Church of Mercer Island.
* They are good at teaching as they go along, and like most of the Irish
social dances, the basics are pretty easy to pick up, especially if you
have even the vaguest familiarity with traditional folk dances of any
culture.
* Tickets are $8.50 for members, $11.50 for non, and $3.50 for folks who
just want to watch. Call 206-782-8345 for more info.
I hope to see you there!
