This is a really great group of bands! I'll be at several of the shows, and would encourage all of you to come too.

  • The Paperboys you all know I am fond of. My usual reminder that their shows will sell out, so get tickets in advance. (See below.) Mary & I will be selling CD's both nights, I think more folks were thinking of going on Saturday, but whatever works for you. Unfortunately, they were unable to get their new CD done, so it's not going to be a "release party" as originally planned; but they are going to be back in the Seattle area for some shows around the 4th of July.
  • Great Big Sea is a young Canadian group that's been being played on The Mountain. They have some Celtic roots, but a lot of the music is more modern pop-rock on the alternative edge. I haven't had a chance to see them live or to even hear much of a wide sample of their music, but I've heard a lot of good things about them.
  • Lunasa is a band made up of members from a lot of other well known Irish & Scottish groups. They have years of experience which creates a tightly bound, high energy show, which while traditional in a general sense, doesn't seem that way when you are listening to them. Definitely my best discovery of last year.
  • Casey Neill Trio is another band I've become quite fond of in the past year. Casey & Zak are based in Portland, and they have various other musicians join them at different times. Recently, Seattle Irish flute player Hanz Araki, has been one of these. It's general American folk with strong Celtic & Bluegrass roots, and a definite environmental slant in many pieces.

Tractor Tavern = 5213 Ballard Avenue NW. Seattle. 206-789-3599. They take cash & checks M-F noon-4pm, and most evenings from 8pm-1:30am. You can also buy them with a credit card via www.ticketweb.com or 800-965-4827. Galway Traders in Ballard (on 15th about 73rd) also sells tickets, but their daytime hours are kind of limited.
