It sounds like jam sessions would work better if they were smaller. How about having more than one? Maybe have themed jams, or jams for type of music--one bluegrass, say, one irish and one rock. Or "Hat Jams" where everyone interested in jamming puts their name in a hat, we draw randomly to get as many groups as we have rooms, split up and go jam. Or several jams in a day, so people could go to whichever was most convenient...
Just kicking some ideas around.
