Another thought is that maybe jams would work better if we had more material in common--it's hard to jam to a tune you don't know at all (I think). What if we had a "canned jam" where we agreed beforehand on, say 10 pieces we would do at the jam (and some good keys :-). That would give us 5 minutes per piece, plus time for a couple of impromptu pieces. People who wanted to participate to the fullest could learn the pieces beforehand, people who just want to improvise, could show up, comb and tissue paper in hand.
