MAGICAL STRINGS = The virtuoso Boulding family and various friends are back for their usual holiday concert series. I'm not much of one for "holiday" music, but I always enjoy this show in part because they make an effort to find little known pieces rather than focusing on the old stand-bys. The events usually sell out, so I'd contact the venue in advance: www.magicalstrings.com
12/8 North Thurston Performing Arts Center in Olympia 7:30pm.
12/9 First Congregational Church in Portland 7:30pm.
12/10 Kent Meridian Performing Arts Center in Kent. 3 & 7pm
12/15 First Baptist Church in Tacoma 7:30pm
12/16 First Presbyterian Church in Downtown Seattle 7pm.
12/17 Lincoln Theater in Mt Vernon 2:30 & 7:30pm
TOM LANDA & THE PAPERBOYS = My favorite Celtic Bluegrass Rock group will be playing at the Tractor Tavern on Dec 14 at 8pm & Dec 15 at 9pm. (Both shows are likely to have an opening group, so The Paperboys won't be on until a bit later most likely.) Tickets are $12 and I would strongly recommend that you get them in advance especially for the Friday night show: You can do so at the Tractor or via Ticket Web. www.paperboys.com THE CASEY NEILL TRIO = Another favorite of mine, and not only because it includes my fluteplayer friend Hanz Araki. They are a general American folk group with strong overlays of Bluegrass and Rock music, mixing some traditional tunes with some powerful original lyrics by Casey Neill, and solid arrangements by Zak Borden.
Thurs DEC 14th - Bellingham, WA TRIO at Wild Buffalo 208 W Holly st
Fri & Sat DEC 15th & 16th - Anacortes, WA TRIO at Watertown Pub
Sun DEC 17th - Portland, OR Casey solo at the White Eagle. This
will be a short set with 2 other featured writers as part of the
Dave Carter & Tracy Grammers Songwriter Night.
A larger tour is in the works for early 2001 as part of the
release of their second group CD. www.speakeasy.org/~jlks/casey/
TELYNOR = Fri 12/15 at 7pm at Dusty Strings in Fremont, $8. John & Anna Peekstok play a variety of music from the Celtic lands, Medieval & Rennaissance era Europe, and early America on an astounding variety of instruments. (Anna playing modern blues on a hurdy-gurdy at Folklife is something I'll never forget!) www.telynor.com STANLEY GREENTHAL = Sun 12/17 "A Winter Solstice Evening" at Valdi's Ballard Bistro in SEattle. 7:30pm, $9 general admission. This concert is organized by Victory Music, a local group that does a lot with Folk, Celtic, Jazz / Blues, and other musical forms. "Stanley performs spirited Celtic and Balkan instrumentals with traditional and original songs of the season." He is a singer / songwriter with expertise on several "guitar family" instruments; and he'll be joined by Kip Greenthal on percussion and harmony vocals, and Joel Bernstein on concertina, fiddle, and harmonica. I've never seen Mr. Greenthal in person, but have heard a lot of good things about him; and Valdi's is a nice place to eat, socialize and listen to music. SETANTA = This is Hanz Araki, Finn McGinty, and Dale Russ. 3 veteran session players from the Seattle area that do a great deal of traditional Irish music with some very contemporary energy. You can see some combination of them and their associates almost every Fri and Sat night at Conor Byrnes, Irish Immigrant, or some of Seattle's other pubs. Setanta has their first group CD coming out, however, on Sunday January 14th at 8pm at the Tractor Tavern. I have an advance copy, and it is fantastic! www.hanzaraki.com CONOR CROKE BENEFIT = Mr. Croke is a Dublin native now living in Seattle. He was paralyzed in a work accident, and has no medical insurance. The local Celtic community is having 2 fund raising benefits for him in December, including raffles, auctions, and lots of music. For more information call Robin at 206-938-3045 or Pat at 206-525-2955. Sunday 12/10 at 7pm at the Irish Immigrant in the Univ District = Owl N Thistle Band, Setanta, & Oliver Mulholland. Sunday 12/31 from 1pm-1am at the Old Pequlia in Ballard = 12 hour disco marathon at $2 a song. That's all I have right now. I hope you all are doing well. Quarong
