replyHere is the latest update from the Tractor Tavern mailing list. I've added some notes to Dan Cowan's text, since the only group he really expanded on was Setanta.

The Tractor is located in Ballard at 5213 Ballard Avenue NW. Seattle. 206-789-3599. They take cash & checks M-F noon-4pm, and most evenings from 8pm-1:30am. You can also buy them with a credit card via www.ticketweb.com or 800-965-4827. Galway Traders in Ballard (on 15th about 73rd) and Dusty Strings in Fremont also sometimes have tickets for these shows, especially the bigger names. To subscribe directly to the Tractor's mailing list, send a note to <celtmail at tractortavern.com> or it appears they've just put up a website at <www.tractortavern.com>.

Sunday, January 14	SETANTA CD release	8:00 * $8
Dan Cowan of Tractor Tavern: "Setanta: A new band name for this talented
trio who have been gigging regularly in the Pacific Northwest and Japan. Dale Russ is one of America's foremost Irish fiddle players, known recently for his recordings with Finn on North Amerikay and previously with piper ToddDenman on Reeds and Rosin. Finn MacGinty, from Dublin, is a longtime band mate of Dale's from the Suffering Gaels, based in Seattle, and is known for his lighthearted songsmanship and on-the-money guitar accompaniment. Hanz Araki rounds out the trio as a soulful singer an Irish flute player." -- [About the trip Hanz says: Finn, Dale and myself have recently returned from our rigorous 4 week tour of Japan and if you haven't already heard the trip was a raging success. We played every manner of gig; from sweaty Tokyo pubs to a 1200th anniversary of one of Japan's most historic Buddhist Temples. We ate, drank and were merry far more than we deserved. Another tour is already being scheduled and although it may consist of sweaty Buddhist temples and historic Tokyo pubs, we're looking forward to it.]

For more info go to: http://www.aniar.com/setanta.html or me to expound at length. :) I have an advance copy of the new CD, and it's been a mainstay in my player. I'm planning my trip to 12th Night around the need to be home in time for the show, and would love to see you there!

Friday & Saturday, January 19 & 20 CLUMSY LOVERS CD release JACKSTRAW 9:30 * $8

"The band play a raucous (and I mean that) blend of Celtic, swing, bluegrass-type rock with acoustic and electric guitars, that wild fiddle, and a set of bagpipes!"- Seattle Weekly. For more info go to: http://www.clumsylovers.com or http://www.summershow.com/jackstraw

Tuesday, February 13 LUNASA	8:00 * $15
One of my favorite finds of the past couple of years. The band is made up
of veterans from other groups, and the level of skill shows in their complex arrangements. The music is mostly traditional Irish, with some Scottish, but the energy level is very modern.

Saturday, February 17 MARY JANE LAMOND	7:00 * $15
Another performer in town because the annual Folk Alliance conference is
occuring this weekend in Vancouver, BC. Ms. Lammond is one of the best known Cape Breton fiddle players. My best description of the style is that it is Scottish at its roots, with some French overlays, and cooked for a very long time in an isolated Canadian Maritime area so that it has diverged from any of its cousins. The step dance form that goes with it is very different from that you otherwise see in Irish or Scottish performances, and probably has more similarity to American tap. Once you hear and see it, you'll never mistake it for anything else. Some folks love this genre, others find it repetitive and boring. Natalie McMaster is another performer of Cape Breton fiddling, so if you've liked her work, you'll like Mary Jane Lammond.

Tuesday, February 20	WATERSON: CARTHY 8:00 * $15
I have no clue, and by this point in the week, I will probably be too
exhausted to go to another concert since I will have just finished Folk Alliance; but if anyone else goes, I'd love to hear about it.
