To quote Dan Cowan of Tractor Tavern: "Setanta: A new band name for this talented trio who have been gigging regularly in the Pacific Northwest and Japan. Dale Russ is one of America's foremost Irish fiddle players, known recently for his recordings with Finn on North Amerikay and previously with piper ToddDenman on Reeds and Rosin. Finn MacGinty, from Dublin, is a longtime band mate of Dale's from the Suffering Gaels, based in Seattle, and is known for his lighthearted songsmanship and on-the-money guitar accompaniment. Hanz Araki rounds out the trio as a soulful singer an Irish flute player." -- For more info go to: http://www.aniar.com/setanta.html or ask me to expound at length. :) --- Tuesday, February 13 LUNASA 8:00 * $15 Tractor Tavern in Ballard One of my favorite finds of the past couple of years. The band is made up of veterans from other groups, and the level of skill shows in their complex arrangements. The music is mostly traditional Irish, with some Scottish, but the energy level is very modern. For more info go to: http://www.lunasa.ie Saturday, February 17 MARY JANE LAMOND 7:00 * $15 Tractor Tavern Another performer in town because the annual Folk Alliance conference is occuring this weekend in Vancouver, BC. Ms. Lammond is one of the best known Cape Breton fiddle players. My best description of the style is that it is Scottish at its roots, with some French overlays, and cooked for a very long time in an isolated Canadian Maritime area so that it has diverged from any of its cousins. The step dance form that goes with it is very different from that you otherwise see in Irish or Scottish performances, and probably has more similarity to American tap. Once you hear and see it, you'll never mistake it for anything else. Some folks love this genre, others find it repetitive and boring. Natalie McMaster is another performer of Cape Breton fiddling, so if you've liked her work, you'll like Mary Jane Lammond. For more info go to: http://www.atlanticartists.com/roots/lamond.html Tuesday, February 20 WATERSON: CARTHY 8:00 * $15 Tractor Tavern I have no clue, and by this point in the week, I will probably be too exhausted to go to another concert since I will have just finished Folk Alliance; but if anyone else goes, I'd love to hear about it. For more info go to: http://www.folkicons.co.uk/wcart.htm Friday, March 2 HEATHER ALEXANDER 8-10pm $5 Shakabrah Java in Tacoma. A strong vocalist and guitar player, she does a variety of original songs in the Celtic genre. Some of you may also recognize her name from her association with fantasy books and SF conventions. This is a nice coffeeshop in West Tacoma. All ages. www.heatherlands.com Friday, March 16 UFFINGTON HORSE at Sunset Hill Community Center in Ballard. This is Heather Alexander's new band, and she's really excited about playing with them. They are taking both a traditional and a rock twist to a variety of Celtic material. Check out www.uffingtonhorse.com for more info. Saturday, March 17 CASEY NEILL TRIO and TOM LANDA AND THE PAPERBOYS at The Showbox 9pm-2am. Probably $12. Celtic / Bluegrass / Rock band The Paperboys at the Showbox are a St. Patrick's Day tradition, and they'll be joined by the Casey Neill Trio, a more Bluegrass / American Folk group; plus some other special guests. These are two of my favorite bands and I'm looking forward to a wonderful evening after doing the parade and dance groups earlier in the day. With luck, The Paperboys will also be celebrating their second Juno award that evening as the winners are announced on 3/4. (The Juno's are the Canadian equivalent to the Grammy's, and their 3rd album, "Postcards" was just nominated. "Molinos" won 2 years ago.) THIS SHOW WILL SELL OUT, so buy your tickets in advance. (Cash only from 11am-4pm weekdays or on a show night.) CD Celebrations in April at the Tractor Tavern: * CASEY NEILL TRIO will be releasing their's on the 5th. They had hoped for January, but the finishing touches took longer than they had thought they would, and it was still being pressed. The guys are excited about it however. * SETANTA had so much fun and success with their CD release in January that they are going to have another big party on the 19th. Come and join a really good energy crowd. Until later, QuarongReceived on 02/07/01 This archive was generated by hypermail 2.2.0. |
