In my case, I used to sing one octave lower whenever a song was high for my register (bass), and never was able to tell. That, plus some just plain off-key singing makes me nervous. It doesn't bother me too much when I'm the singer; only when I'm afraid that people will look around (like they did in choir), trying to find out, "Whose voice is that?!?"
