Subject: [filk] Hello and some comments

Well! I just joined this list yesterday, and was told by Jeff Hitchin that it averaged 10 to 20 posts a month. <grin> I just checked the count on my filter for this folder and it's at 45 in less than a day and still going strong. Glad to see we have opinionated filkers in the area!

First off, just wanted to say hi and introduce myself to those who don't know me, or barely remember me. Alisa Garcia from Puzzlebox here. My husband, Luis (of OoklaTheMok in Buffalo), and I relocated to the Seattle area last April. Luis left Ookla and joined Puzzlebox as our drummer awhile back. We're up in the Snohomish area. Had a baby daughter on April 17th, and have been in remodeling craziness on the new house and baby-raising mode since then, so filk sort of fell off our agenda for awhile. But, we're looking forward to being on this list now to learn about upcoming house filks in the area and other filk activities going on.

Am not familiar with Orycon. Where's it held/when's it held? I take it recently. :-) I know about Norwescon (we've had concerts there the last two years, not counting this year).

So, some comments to add to the debate:

  • I agree with the overall vibe that late concerts suck.
  • I think half hour concerts are fine, with only the GOH and the IF guests going longer.
  • I don't agree with idea of shuffling the entire schedule forward for no-shows (whether they gave notice or not). Callie highlighted most of the reasons I would argue on this point, so I won't bother duplicating her response.
  • And my own personal preference: it would really help if the filk programming gods would allow bands (or individuals with a lot of instruments) to set up early in the afternoon and leave the equipment on or near the stage. As a keyboard player (me) and a drummer (Luis), we have first-hand experience on the setup and soundcheck delay that ensues when the act before you runs late and you still have to lug all your equipment on stage, plug it all in/set it up, do a 30 second soundcheck (that basically takes care of shrieking feedback and nothing else) and still start your concert 10 minutes late. When we were GaFilk IF guests last year, they actually had slotted time in the late afternoon for all guests scheduled that night to do setup and soundcheck. That was the best managed concert series I've participated in. We've had concerts at Consonance, FKO, Baycon, ConChord, Norwescon, OVFF, GaFilk and FilkContinental (I had to miss that one, so can't comment how it went), and our concerts never start on time, both because of previous acts running late and our setup time. GaFilk is the only one that we didn't feel rushed and pressured to basically throw our equipment on the stage and hope that it landed in working order.

See you all around, hopefully. :-)

Alisa
