[filk] Great Big Sea in Seattle & on TV

They will be at the Paramount Theater in Seattle on Wednesday 8/21/02. The show starts at 7pm. Seating is general admission and all ages are welcome.

Tickets = Base cost is $23 and may be a bit more at the door. If you buy them at the Paramount box office Mon-Fri 10am-6pm, there is a $2 surcharge which goes to the theater. You can also get them from Ticketmaster if going Downtown isn't convenient, but you'll pay another $7 for the privilege.

replyMost of you know who Great Big Sea is: An outstandingly talented band from Newfoundland playing the Celtic, Maritime, and just plain fun tunes of that part of the world. Especially with the addition of their new drummer, they are increasingly emphasizing the rock side of "folk rock", but the emphasis is still on the lyrics and the melody; and as good as they sound in their recordings, they are even more fun in person. Seven Nations pulls mainly from the Scottish tradition, with a definite rock base. The closest comparison I could make would be to Wolfstone, but if you don't know their work, Tempest wouldn't be far off either, although they do far more world music influences than does Seven Nations. Many of the songs have political or social messages, but a lot of them are just common pop themes or traditional tunes. I've never heard them in person, but I do have one of their albums, and it's good. Check out www.sevennations.com

The Young Dubliners is a new name to me, but judging by the name and the company they're keeping, I'm guessing they are another Celtic rock band with a bit more emphasis on the Irish tradition. Check out www.youngdubs.com

Television appearance = Trio Broadcasting is repeating Great Big Sea's concert in Ottawa a few months ago. This will be shown on 8/1 at 11pm; on 8/2 at 6am and 1pm; and on 8/23 at 6am; (all PST).

I think that's everything for now.

Hurray for our band of happy ragged folk. Telling old stories and fireside jokes.
Living for the music, the love, and the laugh. Hurray for the riff-raff!
